Somethings are Worth Remembering....Properly June 10th 2023
On June 6th 1944 my dad made his first trip to France. It wasn't very welcoming. I have told his story before. My dad came home from the war in better shape than many. He was wounded on D Day which may have actually saved his life. Those who landed on Juno beach with him that morning were eventually captured and murdered. He was a good man all his life. Honest, hard working, sincere but with a razor sharp sense of humour. D Day and the war shaped his life, and had a lasting effect on all of us. Which had an effect on the communities in which we lived. There were lots of vets of World War II around when I was a kid. Some of them were like my dad. Some of them were unable to unsee and unfeel the horrors to which they were exposed. So when on June 6th. our Premier tweets out a salute to the veterans of D Day "Which marked the beginning of World War II" I am so offended.
So she skipped five years of war in Europe. She also skipped the fall of Hong Kong and the Canadian men and women who fought and surrendered to the Japanese. Not to mention the Canadian Navy that transported troops and defended convoys, or the Canadian Air Force and the bombing missions and fighter escorts. And I am pretty sure I am more embarrassed about this gaff than she is.
So our Premier doesn't know or apparently care about the REAL freedom fighters from our country. While she was still a right wing radio personality spreading mis information about vaccines she also told those listening she wouldn't wear a poppy in November....... cause the government ruined it for her. And that's why we wear a poppy......cause it's all about us. What she lacks in education, she makes up for in confidence.
Tell you what.... If the tax payers of our province are paying for a speech writer, or a publicist for our leader, she should be using him/her. And she should have already used him/her to apologize to those who's families sacrificed so much for our country. But that ain't gonna happen. We are just going to bury this insult like all the ones before. Cause we are embarrassed. Albertans know better than our Premier come to Canadian history. I don't know the exact number, but close to 80% of Albertans and truckers across Canada received the vaccine for Covid. Yet our Premier has committed all her efforts to defend and even interfere with law enforcement to protect those who treated a global pandemic like it was the creation of our federal government.
I got away from politics in these therapy sessions some time ago. Mostly because the free world has lost its way in our defence of democracy. We are watching friends become enemies. We are confused by those who think that consequences as a result of choices are an infringement on freedoms. To our south, We are witnessing the reversal of women's rights, the banning of books, the obvious attempts to make it as difficult as possible for minorities and the poor to vote. We aren't there..........yet. I certainly hope we never get there.
And today I don't want to go there. But our Premier Danielle Smith should be acknowledging her blatant disrespect for those Soldiers, Sailers, and Airmen who were involved in World War II before D DAY. She should show those who voted her government into power some respect by acknowledging her obvious need to speak without thought, or research. Cause it embarrasses all of us.
Cause my Dad was a freedom fighter. And we should never forget what his generation, the BEST generation did for us. For Freedom. For Canada and the world. It is worth remembering.....Properly.
